At EmptyShotgunShells.com, safety and quality are our top priorities. Because we operate strictly as an arts, crafts, and upcycling supplier, we go to great lengths to ensure every piece of brass is 100% inert. We do not manufacture or sell live ammunition or reloading components—our passion is providing safe, clean materials for your next DIY project.
Transforming a once-fired hull or brass casing into a premium crafting component takes more than just a quick wipe-down. Here is a look inside the workshop at exactly how we prep our materials so they are perfectly safe and ready for your props, cosplay, jewelry, flag and wreath projects.

Rigorous Safety Inspection:
Every single shell that enters the shop goes through a strict visual inspection — not once, but across three separate stages of quality control and safety review. Primers are inspected both visually and by touch to confirm a firing dimple—if you are curious about this process, read our full guide on how to identify a live cartridge vs. a spent cartridge. Meanwhile, brass casings are checked to ensure no projectile is present, eliminating any possibility of a dud. We verify that every hull and case is completely spent — meaning absolutely no powder, no live primers, and zero firing capability. By the time they hit the workbench, they are 100% inert scrap metal.
- Deep Cleaning & Polishing: Authentic, once-fired shells come with range grime and heavy wear. We carefully clean and polish the hulls and brass bases to restore that brilliant gold-toned shine, while leaving just enough character so you know you are working with the real deal. Our highest quality polished items undergo our meticulous three-stage hand polishing process, progressing through increasingly fine abrasives to ensure a consistently refined, professional-grade finish.
- Precision Tech & Tooling: Because high-quality crafts require extreme precision, we use some serious technology to process these shells. We custom-design and 3D print specialized jigs to hold each shell perfectly still while we cut, drill, and prep them.
- Custom Laser Engraving: For our specialized custom pieces, we bring in the heavy machinery. Using a 100-watt laser, we can cleanly and precisely engrave those thin brass bases with custom designs, ensuring every mark is crisp, deep, and permanent.
We handle the messy, technical prep work so that when your package arrives, you can get straight to the fun part: creating something beautiful.
